MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AWARENESS MONTH
Each year, May is designated by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.
States and motorcycle organizations across the country
conduct a variety of activities to promote the importance
of motorist awareness and sharing the road with
motorcyclists.
Over two-thirds of fatal motorcycle crashes involve a motorcycle and
another vehicle. The motorist either does not see the
oncoming motorcycle at all or does not see the motorcycle
in time to avoid a crash. It is important for motorists to
know that their actions affect the safety of
motorcyclists.

Cocaine and Marijuana and The Iron Horsemen Motorcycle
Club.

Sixteen people have been arrested, and three more are wanted by federal agents, in a drug trafficking sweep that targets one of the largest motorcycle clubs active in Maine, the Iron Horsemen.
Court records in Portland, unsealed late last week, show the defendants were indicted by a federal grand jury on March 12.
They each face one count of conspiracy to distribute cocaine and marijuana, and some face a range of other counts as well.
York County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette said the defendants are members or supporters of the Iron Horsemen Motorcycle Club, and most of them live in Old Orchard Beach, Limerick and nearby towns.

Can
MySpace friends equate to biker gang affiliation?
By:

DALLAS, Ore.) - A Dallas Oregon man says he never expected to be in trouble for the company he keeps, especially at the age of 51. But some of Les Lowen's MySpace friends may have ties to biker clubs or "gangs," and he says the presence of those friends on his "top friends" list nearly landed him in jail. |
 |
Lowen was picked up on a drunk driving charge last year and the conviction meant a probation term. He says there is little in the way of delineation at the Polk County, Oregon Parole and Probation Office.
"Every time I go in there is a new probation

| officer. The last one threatened to throw me in jail for the people listed as top friends on MySpace. Heck, the person they referred to lives in New York." |

AMA
seeks support for bill to end health insurance discrimination
against motorcyclists
The
American Motorcyclist Association announced today that more than
100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have co-sponsored
a bill that would end health insurance discrimination against
motorcyclists and others who participate in legal recreational
activities or use their motorcycles for transportation.
While
the action is significant, there is still much work to be done,
according to AMA Vice President for Government Relations Edward
Moreland.
"The
AMA is calling on motorcyclists and others who face health
insurance discrimination to urge their Representatives to support
H.R. 1076, known as the HIPAA Recreational Injury Technical
Correction Act," said Moreland. "Time is short. The bill
has broad bi-partisan support but we need 218 votes for passage.
If we don't act by April, we will likely miss our chance for
legislative action in 2008."
